Dear John and Helen, Thank you so much for you kindness and understanding. We recently spent one night in your lovely paradise, and sadly were unable to extend our stay. But we will most definitely be back in the near future. The Blue Gum is one of the most beautiful, classy with a country warmth B & B's we have been most fortunate to discover. We recommend everyone to indulge themselves in this delightful, affordable family run B&B. All the best Nick & Annette

John and Helen and the clan. Better late than never. Tony and I asked you to organise our trip for us. A trip with a difference. You had not handled this type of request before but you came through with flying colours. Your hospitality is well documented by other guests but no one mentions your professionalism in meeting new challenges. We both wish you all the very best and if you need referrals send them to me.

What a lovely friendly and relaxing place to stay. Fantastic facilities, surrounded by such interesting and varied country. John and Helen's knowledge of the region is very impressive! They made our stay so much easier. You wouldn't know there was so much to see and do (in the Tablelands) if you were not to stay with them. Atherton appears to be located in such a central spot to all of the important attractions in the area...what a region. We can't wait to go back next year. Highly recommended. Be sure the Donovan family do their entertaining "Von Trapp Family" farewell for you. Nice to talk to someone who knows his rugby, even if John is supporting the wrong team!

What a great place! This is how all B&B4s should be. Including great hosts. We immediately felt like a part of the family and leaving was the hardest part of our stay. The places John told us we should visit were magnificent and without him - just using the travel giude - we had for sure missed some nice spots. We4ll come back and next time we will stay longer. Still so much to see there! Keep up the great work you are doing and thank you for all! Brigitte & Udo

Dear John, Helen and kids, Thanks for making our stay in the tablelands such a fantastic one. Your hospitality was outstanding, the surrounds totally relaxing, local knowledge and touring ideas exceptional, and drinks on the balcony at sunset unbeatable! All this with the added bonus of getting up each morning knowing that you are about to be greeted and filled by the best breakfast in the tablelands! Staying with you guys definitely made our trip worthwhile - you really go out of your way to provide a friendly and welcoming environment. And any of you out there reading this and considering visiting...stop now and book your trip, you won't be disappointed. Cheers, Nathan and Michelle.

We were very comfortable indeed and were made to feel really welcome. Breakfast on the deck with that beautiful view to the mountains was a memorable, and delicious, experience. John's and Helen's advice on what see and what not to bother with was excellent - John even found us some Platypus!

Hello John, Helen and family! We, Nina & Lars from Finland and Valmay & Jim from NZ found a real pearl in Atherton visiting your beautiful place up in the hills. It was so good with little rain, strong taste of soil and beautiful waterways we found up there. Your thoughtfulness and local knowledge helped us to orientate forwards for Cairns. We stopped to the Maloberti's Gold Coffee plantation, saw kangaroos and much more. Take care of your very special place and be proud of it! Lars & Nina

We stayed three nights at Blue Gum in May 2003. It was a very enjoyable experience. John and Helen shared their knowledge of the region with us which helped us decide what to do while in the region. They are also were very pleasant and very friendly. The accommodation was very nice and quiet. Also, they have the most delightful children. I recommend this B&B to anyone staying in Atherton.

G'day, Helen and John! We're home and back to work in New Jersey, USA after a wonderful vacation in Australia and New Zealand. Ann, John and I (Gregg) want to thank you from the bottoms of our heart for the fantastic full day tour of the Outback. We had the most exciting time on our 1 month Holiday as Australians put it :)The scenery was beautiful and the lunch we had by the billabong which Helen prepared was delicious. Ann loved your home grown Mango and we have never seen one so large! The whole day was packed with scenery from Mount Mulligan, watching kangaroos, winery to hand feeding the Wallabies. Memories we will absolutely never forget. We have film we are getting developed so we can send you pics once they are done. We hope to return to the Land Down Under one day soon and when we do we will be contacting you again as we would like to stay at your Bed and Breakfast and go on further tours as well deeper into the Outback. I will definately recommend your services to anyone I know who may be going to Australia. Once again, Thank you very much for all your kindness and knowledge as you made our day more special then it could ever be! Thank you very much, Gregg, Ann and John.

Can I firstly say your B&B in Atherton was one of the very best places we stayed in on our tour of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Secondly, the meal we had in Yungaburra (BYO Restaurant - the "Burra Inn") was without doubt the best meal we had on our entire trip. I agree entirely with you that the tropical tablelands are not only one of Australia's best kept secrets but one of the world's. It should be an essential part of every visitor's tour of the Northern Eastern part of Australia. Given my background as a Professor of Tourism in Scotland and an ex CEO of the Scottish Tourist Board please feel free to use this feedback. Best wishes.

We booked Blue Gum B@B through the internet, and though the web site was very informative, we knew little about the place. Now we can say that the few days we spent with John, Helen and their wonderful children were the best days for us in Australia. We would never have been able to see so much of Australia without John's tours. John showed us the most beautiful, untouched places, which we would certainly miss going with commercial tours. John's extensive knowledge of the area, his willingness to share this knowledge, his openness to the world, and his intelligence made these tours the most interesting part of our trip. We enjoyed the vacation much more not only because John shared such remote places in Australia with us, but also because we were in the company of kind, good-hearted people. Thank you John and Helen.

G'day, Helen and John! We're at home and back to work after a wonderful stay in Sydney. Taronga Zoo is splendid and the Botanical Gardens were beautiful even in Winter. The performance at the Opera House was really world-class and fitting for such a remarkable structure. And, yes, we even got to see the whales in the Harbor! However nice the attractions of Sydney, we quickly missed the quiet, uncrowded Tablelands. What a beautiful place! And surrounded by so many, varied beautiful places -- Lake Barrine, the Curtain and Cathedral Figs and the Waterfall Tour out of Milaa-Milaa. Of course, for me as the birdwatcher, Hastie's Swamp and the Mareeba Wetlands stand out. Mustn't forget your Platypus Hole: Not only the Platys but a Sea Eagle, to boot! With so many interesting, exciting and beautiful places within easy reach of the Blue Gum Bed and Breakfast, we really regretted having to leave so soon. And it's true that the warmth of our host and hostess and the children topped it all off wonderfully. Say, you didn't mention Faulty Towers! Probably just as well: Sally has memorized most of the scripts and had we started, the nice German couple would have been really confused. But we are forewarned now, Basil! Next time. Bob and Sally

We selected Blue Gum off the internet and were not quite sure what to expect. However the warm and helpful greeting by Helen soon put us at rest as we settled in to our comfortable bedroom/lounge. John came down later to brief us on what to see/do/eat etc. then suggested a couple of things to do before nightfall. The excellent breakfasts were served in a pleasant family environment, with the beautiful children at a respectful distance! Our hosts were very helpful in making bookings to nearby restaurants, which seemed to be very well patronised. We valued the opportunity - at John's direction -in seeing platypus in the wild. It was worth while getting up early. Thanks again, John and Helen, in making our stay such a memorable one.

My favorite part of the two week vacation I spent in Oz was the three days we spent at John and Helen's. The Blue Gum is absolutely charming, as well as being peaceful and relaxing. Helen is a wonderful cook, and John was hilarious in addition to being a great tour guide. Who knew we could have Faulty Towers scenes enacted over homebrew? High standards for a B&B, way beyond our expectations. I have already started recommending their place to my Aussie and US friends, and hope to visit them again the next time I can get to Queensland.

Although we live only one hour away in Cairns, we decided to escape the heat and humidity and relax on the cool Atherton Tablelands for a weekend. Blue Gum was recommended to us by Queensland Rail, and I have to say that it was the best advice we have received for a long time. We found the rooms spacious, clean and homely, with an adjoining common room for next time we bring more friends! We know the area quite well, being 'locals' but the most important advice I would offer to anyone reading this site with a view to staying at Blue Gum would be "Relax with John and Helen, and let them share their extensive local knowledge, excellent breakfasts, splendid views, ornithology in the garden, and the best room rates for miles" We were amazed at how little we knew of the area, and the boundless opportunities John and Helen can offer. As locals, we are proud to know that tourism in the area has an honest, friendly and welcome face at Blue Gum. We'll be back!

First our intention was to stay only for 1 night. After a warming welcome from Helen and recommendations to see the local Christmas carols by some of Atherton? pre-schools kids, where also Meg and Kate Donovan performed. After a good nights sleep we decided to stay one more night. Under the lovely breakfast John told us what we could do during the day. At the same evening after a wonderful day we decided to stay two more nights. And guess what7After the two nights we decided to stay even one more nightJ And the only reason that we couldn? stay any longer was that we had a flight from Cairns airport the next morning. Vir Super Hostem, is Latin and it means something like: A man who is proprietor for the guests. This is also John? old family European heraldry shield since long time ago, but even in our age it? still so perfect for Donovan. It? hard to find any better place in Queensland than together with John and Helen and all the lovely kids. We miss you all! Congradulations John and Helen on your first class B&B. The 2 nights that we shared your home was lovely, the customer service that you offered exceeded our expectations. Your home was just perfect for the 2 nights of our honeymoon, not to mention the balcony breakfasts. You have got it right.THANK YOU ,WELL DONE

This was our very first stay at a Bed and Breakfast and what an introduction. Our only regret is that we did not stay at Blue Gum B&B when we first arrived on the Tablelands. John knows all the sights to see in the area and gave us so much information on things to do and see that we would have missed if we had not stayed with them. As well as being central to all the attractions the Tablelands has to offer Blue Gum felt like a home away from home, very clean and comfortable. Our children were made to feel very welcome. John, Helen and family, Thank you, we will be back.

We enjoyed our stay at the Atherton Blue Gum B&B very much. The hospitality we received was of the highest degree, and unmistakably the best. John and Helen made every effort to make us feel welcome, and part of their family. All the best.

Our stay was terrific and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would certainly recommend it. Everyone was so very friendly and your certainly will not get a better breakfast anywhere. We can certainly recommend the International Club near by for a great evening out!

Great location, great lodgings, great people, great food and outstanding home brew are but a few of the reasons to visit the Donovans in this idylic setting. We always feel like we are home when we stay at the Atherton B&B. Don't deny yourself the opportunity to relax with the hosts who really do have the most.

Breakfast on Blue Gum's verandah, with such a breathtaking view and the pleasure of White-cheeked Honeyeaters feeding on flowers just feet away, is such a joy you want it to last all day.
