Grassy Hill, Cooktown - Picture Tour

Grassy Hill, Cooktown

Grassy Hill was an important place to James Cook back in 1770 as he had to analyse the waters, reefs and sandbanks so that he could captain the ship Endeavour safely down the coastline. He spent much time up there and so a monument sits there today which details his trip to claim Australia. Also up there is the Grassy Hill Sun-Dial which is actually a Global Positioning Monument and marks the distance between the point on top of Grassy Hill and major cities around the world.
