Cairns is a North Queensland regional city with a population of about 151,000 (in 2017). It's located about 1700km north of Brisbane and is a popular travel destination for both Australian and overseas tourists due to its warm tropical climate. There's some 900 islands located in the Great Barrier Reef. Obviously we can't map them all so here's a map of the major islands off the Cairns and the surrounding region, including Hinchinbrook Island, Lizard Island and Fitzroy Island.

The state of Queensland is the second largest in Australia however it is also about 7 times larger than the United Kingdom. The most northern point is the Cape York Peninsula and it's most southern is the border between Queensland and New South Wales which is Tweed Heads.
Travelling between Cairns and Cooktown, whether you go by the inland road or the coastal road, you are going to pass through some lovely, small north Queensland towns.
A tourist destination in its own right, Cairns is also the gateway to Green Island National Park (near Arlington Reef) and Fitzroy Island National Park via ferry.
