Far North Wilderness Bike Tour 2013
Eight unforgettable days of cycling: climbing through the rainforest covered mountains in the Wet Tropics area between Innisfail, Ravenshoe and Cairns.
- Over 500kms on mostly remote dirt roads with minimal traffic.
- Spectacular scenery including waterfalls and gorges, rainforest and open forest, hard to access country that many locals have not seen.
- An intimate and friendly ride with a maximum of 65 riders.
- Fresh home-cooked meals and snacks.
- Charity event to support the work of the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre.
Here is an outline of what you can expect. We transfer from Cairns to Innisfail to start cycling. We take the back roads to Mena Creek, site of the famous Paronella Park. We then spend two days riding through the central rainforest section of Wooroonooran National Park, part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area along the Gorrell Track and Suttees Gap Road to Ravenshoe. We continue on a largely downhill route to Yourka Station. This is a remote Bush Heritage property where we camp two nights by beautiful natural lagoons. We then head back across the Atherton Tablelands to Tinaroo Dam. The last two days finds us riding through Dinden National Park, past Copperlode Dam and then back into Cairns.
The route this year consists of what we consider the best campsites and routes from previous years plus a new (to the ride) wonderful wilderness campsite at Dinden National park. We will be spending 2 nights at the beautiful bush heritage listed Yourka station where there is the option to camp along the lagoons and enjoy the amazing number of birds which frequent these lagoons. The day at Yourka includes the option of riding to the spectacular Herbert River Gorge and enjoying exciting swimming in any of the stunning pools above the falls. There will be about four and a half days riding through World Heritage rainforest and a couple of days riding in open scherophyll forest.
