Mount Mulligan
Mount Mulligan is a ghost town located 170km west of Cairns and is the site of the greatest underground disasters in Queensland's history. On September 19, 1921 a huge coal dust explosion killed 75 or maybe 76 men working in the doomed mine. The community was never the same after the tragedy and left the town after the burials were held.
Hire a 4WD and visit the graveyard with still legible headstones, see abandoned tunnels, rusted out machinery, quiet streets and unused buildings. Let the red dust mingle with your tears as well as the tears of the past as you see the life and death of this mining town.
