Friday Island Pearl Farm
Pearl shell was discovered in the waters back in the 1860s and led to a rush of pearl farmers from all over Oceania to the Torres Strait Islands. By 1877 there were 16 firms working the waters off Thursday Island, however, the pearl trade stopped after World War II began. Culture pearl farms still exist and you can visit these working farms as part of your Torres Strait Island tour.
