Cairns & Tropical Reef Islands Map
There's some 900 islands located in the Great Barrier Reef. Obviously we can't map them all so here's a map of the major ones off the Cairns and the surrounding region. One of the most southern island's and also the largest in the system is Hinchinbrook Island which is almost entirely covered by National Park except for one small Island Resort. Lizard Island is one of the most northern and is home to one of Australia's most exclusive, beautiful and private resorts. Fitzroy Island is one of the closest to Cairns port and is protected National Park except for a tiny bit of land on the western side of the island. Fitzroy Island has some great snorkelling where you can literally walk off the sand beach and onto some gorgeous fringe reef. Have a look at our Islands Destination page to learn more about the various islands of the Great Barrier Reef.
